The Informers and other recent rentals..
Has everyone seen The Informers yet? There's lots of nudity! But our hero isn't nude for one second. All we see of Mr. Lucky is his hairy legs on the beach. Ya, I know...
Chris Isaak gives a very convincing and somewhat humorous performance as Les Price in Bret E Ellis' screen adaption of his novel by the same name. Les is an absentee father trying to reconcile with his son played by Lou Pucci. Les is a guy who always gets what he wants. He's a successful businessman in LA, alcoholic and a womanizer. He is determined to take his son with him to Hawaii for the weekend as a last ditch effort to try and bond. It's obvious from the beginning that they have nothing in common and any efforts to try to relate to each other are futile to the point of being comical.
In the novel we know that Les is divorced from his son's wife and she is trying to tell him to give up reconciling with his son because he wants nothing more to do with him which Les stubbornly ignores. The story is told from Les' point of view. He is worried that his son is becoming a homosexual and it's his responsibility to steer the boy in the right direction. In the movie, there is no narration and we depend on Chris Isaak to tell us what Les is thinking WITHOUT WORDS. He does so BEAUTIFULLY in two shots! Movies are so cool that way. A picture is worth a thousand words...
Night Train is another film I recommend for its brilliant acting. Danny Glover plays a major role as the train conductor. He runs into various other characters, played by well known actors, one of which plays the bass player in another movie that stars Chris Isaak, That Thing You Do. If you like mystery/suspense/thrillers then you'll ADORE this little movie. It's a great date movie because you can talk at length about it over dinner...if that's what you're into besides casual sex. har har!
