Email interviews are usually impersonal, dry, lacking in zzha zzha zzhoo. So when I had the “opportunity” to exchange e-mails with one of my all time favorite songwriters, I was a little bummed and a bit skeptical that some publicist was going to insert agenda-inspired comments as a boring reply. But despite its electronic happenstance, this interview happens to be the real deal. I watched his show religiously; I remember his humor; I know his songs by heart; and I’m pretty dang sure this is the tall, lanky, sexy-cool singer who wears flashy suits, known as Chris Isaak.

Why would a recording artist with more than two decades of success as a songwriter choose to record an entire album of other artists’ hits? And not just any old hits, mind you, but some of the biggest hits of some of the most iconic performers of the rock era — Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis, to name three?

Once musicians make their initial visit to Sun Studio, it's like finding the Holy Grail. Just ask Chris Isaak, who had a concert tour bus driver go to 706 Union Ave. ---- an address he'd memorized ---- while passing through Memphis years ago.

Chris Isaak has long been termed a retro artist, given that his sound (and image) is heavily indebted to the ‘50s and ‘60s. It’s more accurate to call his sound timeless, for his romantic yet oft-melancholy crooning style sounds fresh, not dated. He has made a mark as a songwriter via songs like his hit “Wicked Game,” but his new album, Beyond The Sun, features his interpretations of songs from rock ‘n roll’s early golden days of the ‘50s and early ‘60s. Such classics include “I Walk The Line,” “Great Balls Of Fire,” and “Can’t Help Falling In Love.”

Years ago now, the first time Chris Isaak and his band rolled into Memphis on tour, Isaak asked his bus driver to pull over on Union Avenue in the middle of the night, so he could pay tribute to the birthplace of so much of the music that inspired him.

Nonstop Honolulu recently caught up with Chris Isaak, who returns to the islands to perform at Blaisdell Concert Hall on Wednesday evening. The rock ‘n’ roll singer and musician, known for his gregarious and rick-rollicking sense of humor, chatted about everything from his latest album, “Beyond the Sun,” to his love for Hawaiian music, Molokai and shave ice.

His newest album, Beyond the Sun, pays tribute to classic artists with covers of their legendary songs and was recorded in Memphis, Tenn., at Sun Records Studios. In an email interview, he discussed the new CD, Christmas songs and his reflective suit.

If you weren’t there, you missed out. Chris Isaak and his crack band brought chops, feeling and showmanship to the stage in a rootsy, sentimental and rockin’ performance that lasted more than two hours at Blaisdell Concert Hall Wednesday night, delivering the goods with enough gusto that the crowd came to its feet several times thoughout the show.

ASHLAND — Chris Isaak says he loves the audience reaction when he and his band “rip into some of that early rock and roll,” after playing his familiar hits such as “Wicked Game” and “Baby Did a Bad Bad Thing.”

In his red sequined Grand Ole Opry duds and a suit made of mirrors, flanked by rockabilly band mates he’s played with for decades, Chris Isaak put on a quite a show in Castle Theater a week ago.

It is an obvious no-brainer that Chris Isaak tracked his most recent full-length, "Beyond the Sun," at the historic Sun Records in Memphis. Although Isaak is famous for his sexy Wicked Game hit, with its even sexier video, along with the natural humor in his witty Chris Isaak Show, this smooth operator is a roots rock guy deep down at heart.

In preparation for the show, Lehigh Valley Music conducted an e-mail interview with Isaak, asking about the new album, his career and his shows at Penn’s Peak near Jim Thorpe this spring and Bethlehem’s Musikfest festival in 2009.
last but not least - my favorite one (especially when he is talking about 'Silence of the Lambs') and yes I still would love to see Chris taking his shirt off *g*:

Q&A: Chris Isaak Talks 20 Years on Billboard Charts, Covering Elvis and Keeping His Shirt On -
Re: New articles on the internet
wow thank you so much! purrfect. PS is that billboard one the set of clips where halfway through he lets slip "my girlfriend" something something and then hastily covers up with "oh this was years ago". Ha! yeah right Mr Isaak!!

Chris Isaak: all the way from Memphis
The Telegraph By Bernadette McNulty7:20AM GMT 19 Jan 2012
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/music/rockandpopfeatures/9023549/Chris-Isaak-all-the-way-from-Memphis.html#.Txi_nVKpEUs.email
excerpts:
Chris Isaak tells Bernadette McNulty what led him to trade his gentle croon for a cover album of Sun Records rock and roll classics.
.
Now, with all of them - with the exception of Lewis - dead, Isaak has stepped up as the guardian and curator of the Sun sound. "It was finally the right time. I thought that I had put out enough work by now that I would finally not be defined by it. I could put out a Hawaiian album [now] and people wouldn't go, 'Chris Isaak, Hawaiian artist'
......
When I ask him why a new generation of musicians, from Lana del Rey to British Mercury winners the xx are tapping back into his haunting Wicked Games sound, he is reluctant to get into self-examination.
"Any time you talk about your own stuff you sound self-aggrandising. It is funny for me, the dichotomy between what I sing and who I am. The heartbreak is real but sometimes I think I am just a very average, redneck guy. When I was growing up and doing boxing, people were surprised I sang these songs that most guys don't sing."
For all his tender lyrics and model good looks he has never married, repeating to me the well-worn story of his regret over a lost teenage love. However, he admits the all-consuming relationship in his life has probably been with his music, and later on at a gig in New Jersey, it shows. Isaak and his band put on the kind of gig that not only rolls back the years, but would put the stagecraft of most younger bands to shame. Isaak switches back and forth between hilarious stand-up comic and heartbreaking singer, with women literally clambering to get close to him.
......
"I've had the same band for 26 years," he says. "I can sing a thousand songs with them. When you come to the end, do you think, did I make money, did I get a big house, did I get famous? None of that counts. All that counts is did you have fun at your work, were you any good at it and did you have good friends?"
'Beyond the Sun' is released January 23 on Warners

Re: New articles on the internet
Thanks for all the super duper links!
The following isn't a new interview as it relates to the Mr Lucky cd so sorry if you've seen it before. However, I got a chance to watch it on Monday and enjoyed it aside from the cringe making faux pas the interviewer makes in reference to Herb Ritts;

Hope you enjoy too!
I also noticed Chris was a guest at Muhammad Ali's 70th birthday bash, check out the pics;

RE: New articles on the internet
Some more stuff from Germany - guess he did not just stop over for the Harald Schmidt Show
:
This radio interview will be aired Thursday 8th March, 20:00 CET - they have a livestream and there is already a little video on that site
http://www.hr-online.de/website/radio/h:r1/index.jsp?rubrik=58919&key=standard_document_44187556
And this is a brilliant interview - not the usual stuff, even though I'm quite sure that it is not a good translation of what he sad - there are a few things which I've had never heard him saying before, using words that are not typical for him.

Thank you for finding that, Gaby. I won't be able to listen to it live today but hopefully they will offer it as a podcast. Wicked Game he did at the station is really, really extra nice and pretty, and he sang the entire acoustic version of the song for a change. I also love the photos the radio station put up, as you can see--they're really cute. Chris did an interview with the gal at that station in 2006 when he and Kenney were there before.
I also enjoyed him singing "My Happiness" in its entirety on the Gabby show. Thanks to the great youtube guy who uploaded it for all CI fans! Now if we could only get Chris backstage at the Muhammad Ali special. -

Hi Baby Blue, I'm just sitting here, listening to the radio show, which is actually very, very nice and very long (something like 2,5 hours) - they are not just playing songs from Chris but also songs Chris asked for: Beatles, Chet Baker, Glen Campbell, Amalia Rodrigues, The Raveonettes and many more. And of course they are chatting all the time and I really enjoy it to listen to Chris voice and his stories about other musicians, his time at the Sun Studio and also some personal stuff. He actually just confirmed that his dad died the week before he came over to Europe. And I was surprised to learn, that his father had some German roots. Didn't know that before.
However, I will have to watch that Video from the Gabby show on you tube. Haven't had time yet. It is really great that it has been posted. But it's only the song not the full interview, right? -
RE: New articles on the internet
The radio livestream was GREAT! Thanks. You can tell from the photos he looks pretty ripped up, and it seemed selfish to enjoy the radio show so much! But what a treat to listen while I'm working - - listening to Chris is always like eating candy!
Thanks again.

Rock star plumbing
Doug Elfman, Isaak pays tribute to Sun Studio greats. Las Vegas Review Journal
http://www.lvrj.com/news/isaak-pays-tribute-to-sun-studio-greats-145888935.html
Excerpt:
Chris Isaak has too much going for him. He's an acclaimed stage performer, he acts in movies, he's a humble sex symbol. And he fixes his mom's house.
Isaak called me the other day, and I asked him what he was up to.
"My mom had a leak with her plumbing, and you never stop being a son just because you get to be in rock 'n' roll," he said.
"So it's 1-800-rockstar-plumbing," he said jovially.
...
Isaak also worked with Lewis, ... the first tragic rock figure because he was ruined for marrying a young cousin.
"I think he got a bum ride," Isaak said. "Can you imagine today if they were kicking people out of rock 'n' roll because of their morality? They couldn't put together a trio!
"Here was Elvis, living with 14-year-old Priscilla. Nobody was on that.
"Thank God we've moved on to the point now that no one expects any musician to have any morality!" he said and laughed. .... he jokes, "I have no credibility because I've never been arrested."
Mr Rooter perchance? Or Rocker Rooter sounds catchy? -

thanks Gaby! Hope all is well there and yeah my favourite is that Guardian one too.
Fyi here's blast from the past - 1999. I hope Mr Isaak doesn't try and sit on that blow up doll on stage if this is any indication: http://youtu.be/qxaONaMiJEw and then, when you think the interview couldn't get weirder, it does..... heh heh -
RE: New articles on the internet
Great stuff, Melody, had a good laugh - thanks for posting! He looked very professional giving her the massage *g*
Around here everything is fine! After giving up hope that there will be some more gigs around Europe in October, I just booked my tickets for Paris (front row, couldn't believe how much luck I had to get such a ticket) and Brussels (standing - even better).
Hope you fine, too!
